24/01/2011 - Using Photoshop to edit photographs

Although I am not using my first set of photographs for my magazine, I felt it would be beneficial to practise using Photoshop to help me learn how to edit.

I have created a gif to show the before and after of this image.

24/01/2011 - First set of photographs

For my first lot of photographs I decided to dress my model in black clothing and a punk style t-shirt to convey the type of music that the magazine is selling. I asked the model to pull various poses and faces and captured them on the camera. I used the schools lighting and back ground equipment and focused the light on her face to create a shadow.

Here are some of the photopgraphs shown as thumbnails that I selected to be the best out of the load that I took.

After looking at the photographs that I had taken in great detail, I found that I was pleased with some of the poses that the model was pulling and she is perfect for my magazine. However, the camera was not focused on some of the photographs and there was either too much light or not enough. For her clothing I think I might add perhaps a studded leather or denim jacket to create a stronger image and remove her personal items like her jewellry. I plan to reshoot these photographs to find the perfect image that is focused with enough light and shadow created.

I have selected a few photographs which will help me to retake my pictures.

These are my favourite photographs that I have taken so far as I think that her face is really expressive and conveys the type of manic and fun personality that she has as well as representing a punk type image. From these pictures I have identified what I can use (poses, clothing) and what I need to impove on (lighting, additional clothing and focus) which should help when I reshoot.

4/01/2011 - Fonts and Colours

For my music magazine I will need a compelling title to attract readers and be remembered. My magazine is a punk/rock type magazine so I thought of a few names and asked for opinions from several people. After narrowing down the choices I was left with the title 'Warp' which reminds me of the Warped Tour which is a music and extreme sports tour. Using InDesign I have been experimenting with different fonts and colours and so far I have chosen the colours of pink and green as they make me think of generic punk colours. However, I will continue to experiment with perhaps bolder colours like red and black that will definitely stand out.

To find the ideal text I wrote the magazine title out 11 times on Indesign and tried it with different fonts. I then picked some of the fonts that I liked and added them to a new page. From this I tried different colours and over lapping the text to create a shadow effect. The last picture shown here is not the final text but perhaps a closer insight to what the final text may be. I think I will perhaps overlap the letters or space them out so that they are not so close.

I manipulated the size and position of the letters and this is my final result. I do not think that I will be 100% sure about this font until I have produced the front page of the magazine and can see if it will compliment the rest of the page. I do like as it is distorted and represents the name as the word is formed in differnt sizes and places.
